Chair's Message

The Department of Hispanic Studies values diversity, equity, and inclusion, and fosters a community of free inquiry rooted in cross-cultural understanding, equity, and inclusivity that respects the principles of human rights and social justice for all. Our faculty, students, and staff come from the United States, Latin America, Spain, and beyond, representing a variety of cultures, nationalities, linguistic traditions, races and ethnicities, genders, and religious and socio-economic backgrounds. Our Department is committed to providing a healthy, safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all, and to confronting systemic inequality and injustices that have historically and disproportionately disenfranchised people for their race, class, ethnicity, skin color, sex, sexuality, gender identity, religion, nationality, migratory status, age, ability, language/dialect or political affiliation.

Our mission is to study, educate, and generate knowledge about the diverse languages and cultures of Spain, Latin America, and the Latinx United States, while respecting the academic freedom of our faculty and students, and preparing students to participate in a diverse workforce as citizens of a pluralistic society. We endeavor to deliver a culturally aware curriculum that opposes all forms of bigotry and discrimination by incorporating forms of knowledge that reflect the diversity of cultural, critical, and theoretical production, methodologies, and pedagogies across the Spanish-speaking world. We are committed to engaging viewpoints from across the cultural, historical, political, and socio-economic spectrum; generating productive debate on world affairs past, present, and future; and working to develop a knowledge base that supports these commitments.
