Aztec Poster From UK Makes Cover of National Library Publication

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 29, 2014)College & Research Libraries News, published by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), currently is featuring a familiar image as its January 2014 issue cover photo — an Aztec tribute poster from "A Glimpse into Ancient Mexico: Writings of the Aztecs, Mixtec and Maya" exhibit at the University of Kentucky's William T. Young Library.

The exhibit at Young Library is one of many events presented by UK Libraries as part of UK College of Arts & Sciences "Passport to the World: ¡Viva México!," which encourages the campus and community to embark on year-long explorations of the culture and history of a particular region or country. This particular exhibit is on display through Jan. 31.

Adrian Ho, director of Digital Scholarship at the University of Kentucky Libraries, submitted two images last December to College & Research Libraries News and the tribute poster was immediately chosen for the January 2014 cover.

College & Research Libraries News is the official news magazine and publication for ACRL and is published 11 times per year. The publication features columns on the latest trends and practices affecting academic and research libraries.

The Aztec tribute poster submitted by Ho is a page from the Codex Mendoza, a work commissioned by Antonio Mendoza, the first Viceroy of New Spain, around 1541, just 20 years after the conquest of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. Intended to inform King Charles V of Spain about his recently conquered subjects, the Codex Mendoza was painted by indigenous scribes under the supervision of Spanish clerics, who wrote Spanish glosses for the Aztec characters. The page documents the semi-annual tribute owed to Spain by the province of Tochtepec in the Gulf coastal lowlands of northern Oaxaca and southern Veracruz. The codices are housed in UK Libraries Special Collections.

UK's Special Collections is home to UK Libraries' collection of rare books, Kentuckiana, the Archives, the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History, the King Library Press and the Wendell H. Ford Public Policy Research Center. The mission of Special Collections is to locate and preserve materials documenting the social, cultural, economic and political history of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
